American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry Recommendations
Children should brush their teeth for a full two minutes, twice a day, using a soft-bristled toothbrush and a fluoride toothpaste appropriate for their age. Parents should use only a rice-grain-sized smear of toothpaste for children under three and a pea-sized amount for children ages three to six. Brushing should cover all surfaces of every tooth using gentle, circular motions, and children typically need hands-on help from a parent until around age seven or eight, when they develop the dexterity to brush effectively on their own.
Every child’s development is different, so please share any questions you may have with our experienced team.
When helping your child brush their teeth, teach your child to spend 30 seconds in each quadrant, making sure to brush the front, back, top, and sides of each tooth. The above video can be used to help your child gauge the amount of time they should spend brushing their teeth.
